        Henry Repeating Rifle, c. 1862 | A State Divided

This rifle was used by Henry Harrison Harding (1831-1915), a home guard in Cynthiana, Harrison County, KY, during the Civil War. The Henry repeating rifle was a popular gun that fired quickly. It could shoot up to 28 rounds per minute. This type of gun was mostly used by Union soldiers. But the government did not buy very many of them because of their cost and because they required so many bullets. Some soldiers bought them on their own. Sometimes, civilians would band together and buy them for soldiers.

This resource is part of the A State Divided: Exploring the Civil War Through Images collection.
