This booklet, written by Charles E. Ware, shows several Confederate battle flags. Flags were sources of pride and honor for soldiers. They also helped men maintain their positions during battle. Armies would try to capture their enemies' flags. In 1905, the U.S. returned captured Confederate flags to the states that they came from. This was one of the many steps taken to mend relations between the North and South in the years after the war.
