United States Colored Troop Muster and Descriptive Roll, 1864-1865 | A State Divided

A list of the soldiers in a military company is called a muster roll. This ledger contains the muster rolls of some African-American troops. African Americans joined the Union Army in the last two years of the war. Most were former slaves. They gained their freedom by joining the army. This muster roll includes the names of the men’s former owners. Having black soldiers in the army angered some whites on both sides of the war.
