A native of New York City, Laquita Mitchell sang in church choirs as a child. She pursued an education in arts education and voice. She went on to win several prestigious opera awards.
This video segment was recorded early in Mitchell’s career. At the time, she had already performed as a member of the Houston Grand Opera and had sung with the Boston Symphony. She had come to Louisville, Kentucky, to work with young artists as part of the Kentucky Center for the Arts’ Gheens Great Expectations project, which brought rising young artists together with students in the community.
Since this segment was recorded, Mitchell has continued her career in opera. She has earned acclaim for her performances with major opera companies throughout North America and Europe.
