Performance: River City Drum Corp | Music Arts Toolkit
A group of young people ages 4–20 perform African drumming as part of the River City Drum Corp. This Louisville, KY based group teaches about African drumming and culture as well as skills needed for academic and personal success.
River City Drum Corp was founded in 1993 by Ed White. His goal was to create a cultural program that would bring together traditional African drumming, drum making, performance, and leadership for at-risk youth. Kids from preschool through young adulthood perform in the corp.
Over the years, hundreds of young people have gone through the program. The River City Drum Corp has served as a model for similar programs on other cities. In addition to teaching about drumming and African culture, the program also teaches its members about skills needed for personal, academic, and social success. “We’re not just over here beating drums,” says White. “We’re committed to the education and sense of community that comes with it.”
