George Braunstein has witnessed segregation and experienced antisemitism, but it hasn’t changed his love for America. Braunstein joined the U.S. Army at age 19. While on a march in France during World War II, Braunstein watched as a church steeple exploded, sending shrapnel in all directions. A piece of metal struck him, leaving a scar under his chin. It was his first experience in war. Braunstein, who lives in Orlando, Florida, later received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.
