Independently finding solutions to mathematical problems allows learners to build skills, understanding, and confidence. As these increase, so does a learner's readiness for the next educational step, be it the GED®, postsecondary education, or solving real-world problems. Instructors may find it difficult to allow learners to be challenged and struggle with problems, though research indicates that the more time learners spend gathered around a problem, the deeper their eventual understanding and their retention of the material.
