In this video, a police officer explains how math is used to help reconstruct traffic accidents and how a math mistake can mean the difference between an innocent and guilty verdict. In the accompanying classroom activity, students solve problems using the same formula that police officers use as they determine car speed during traffic accidents. To get the most from the lesson, students should be comfortable using a calculator to find square roots. They should also be familiar with speed in miles per hour.
