Watch an animated demonstration of calculating the surface area of polyhedrons by finding the area of component polygonal faces in this video from KCPT. In the accompanying classroom activity, students watch video, and complete two hands-on activities: they calculate the surface area of a polyhedral object and use graph paper, scissors, and tape to create a rectangular pyramid with a given surface area. Students should be comfortable calculating the area of parallelograms and triangles. Prior exposure to right rectangular prisms and to surface area is helpful.
