The Lowdown | Analyzing Functional Relationships: California’s Shrinking Reservoirs

In this interactive, investigate the shrinking water volume in California reservoirs over several years. In the accompanying classroom activity, students compare several curves, each representing water volume over the course of a single year for a given reservoir. They interpret the shape of the curves as reflecting intervals of time over which water volume increased, decreased, and remained stable. To get the most from this lesson, students should have some experience interpreting slope as rate of change over time.
