        Thinkport | Building Sculptures

Practice with formulas for the volume of prisms, spheres, cones, cylinders, and pyramids in this interactive from MPT. In the accompanying classroom activity, students use the interactive and then do a hands-on activity in which they estimate and calculate the volume in cubic inches of a variety of geometric objects. To get the most from this lesson, students should have had exposure to volume formulas for most or all of the following: prisms (rectangular and other), spheres, cones, cylinders, and pyramids. They should also have experience calculating the area of a circle. For a longer self-paced student tutorial using this media, see "Building Sculptures" on Thinkport from Maryland Public Television.
