Images of African Americans | The African Americans
This video from The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross examines the ways in which pro-slavery proponents defended slavery and explores how negative perceptions of African Americans are perpetuated.
Frame the video with a discussion on stereotypes: Where do they come from? How do they spread?
Pause the video when the stereotype images printed in newspapers are shown and have students write down the descriptive words that come to mind when they see those images. Ask them how these images would influence the perception of someone who is seeing an African American for the first time.
As a class project, ask students to examine stereotypes they see today on TV, in movies, in commercials or advertisements, and have them write a persuasive essay critiquing the representation.
