Before viewing, distribute the student handout on Special Field Order 15 and have students read it independently and highlight or circle phrases that help them understand the goal of this special order.
In the video segment, students learn that the land distribution stated in the Special Field Order number 15 resulted from a meeting held by General William T. Sherman with 20 leaders of the African American community in Savannah, GA. Have students imagine that they are one of the twenty men in that meeting and write a persuasive essay or letter that urges General Sherman to allow them to own land. (This activity on persuasive writing could be tailored to guide your students.)
