This video resource from Nature: "Cracking the Koala Code" explores the koala's diet of gum leaves. Gum leaves are toxic and contribute to the koala's well-known lethargy. Koalas must eat for five hours each day because the leaves they eat are not highly caloric. In addition, the leaves are very tough to digest and it takes days for a koala to digest its meal. This video resource also introduces Mary and her joey Bruce. Joeys must eat their mothers' feces in order for their bodies to eventually adapt to their leaf-eating diet.
This video is available in both English and Spanish audio, along with corresponding closed captions.
