Sloths & Moths: A Mutually Beneficial Relationship
Help students explore the essential question “How are plants and animals in an ecosystem connected?” The video describes the mutually beneficial relationship between sloths, moths, and algae: Moths living in the sloth’s fur are thought to help provide additional sustenance to the sloths by supporting the growth of algae, which the sloth eats. Have students depict the sloth, moth, and algae relationship using the Mutually Beneficial Relationship Infographic in the student handout section. Students will create the captions by answering the prompts with information they learned from the Sloths in their Ecoystems video.
The Sloths in their Ecosystem video presents a lot of information about sloths and their connections to plants and other animals in their ecosystem. As students watch, have them jot down factual information about the species in their notebooks or use the Sloths in Their Ecosystem graphic organizer.
Then, have students display the information they collected in a new way. Many are probably aware of new popular online news and media strategies that provide readers/viewers with information using formats such as lists and quizzes (for example, a “10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Wizard of Oz” list or “What era should you have been born in?” quiz). There has even been a term coined for information presented with a list thematic structure: listicle. These formats are visually appealing and entertaining, but also can be educational and inspirational. Have students share what they’ve learned about sloths from this video using a similar presentation. Encourage students to be creative with how they portray the information. For instance, a student might make a “10 thing you never knew about sloths” listicle.
As an extension, have students add visuals to their lists and quizzes. Then, convert their works into social media-friendly versions, and post on popular social media and/or new-sharing websites. See if sloths can go (even more) viral!
