Survival of the Moose: Nutrition in the first year
Watch as a Moose Cow teaches her calf the skills needed to survive her first year of life in the Canadian Rockies. Examine lessons in nutrition, bonding and eventually leaving the nest in this episode of NATURE.
Before watching the video explain to students that the moose population in North America is rapidly declining and that the lifetime of a calf can be determined by whether or not he survives his first year of life.
Think about conditions that may affect the quality and longevity of a moose calf’s life (availability of food, climate, season, predators) and what steps the moose cow can take to ensure that her calf can make it through that first critical year.
Before watching the video explain to students that the moose population in North America is rapidly declining and scientists are trying to figure out why.
