A close view of the face of a young Asian elephant

A new DNA study in 2003 has proven that Borneo's elephants are a unique population that colonized Borneo in the Pleistocene and deserve to be classified as a distinct subspecies (Elephas maximum borneensis) of the Asian elephant. Only about 2000 elephants remain in this highly endangered population that faces threats from conversion of forest habitat to agriculture and increasing conflict with man.
