First Spacecraft at Neptune | NASA Planetary Sciences

Learn about the Voyager 2 mission to Neptune in this video from NASA. Voyager 2 reached Neptune in 1989, 12 years after launch, and the flyby was the first and only time a spacecraft has visited Neptune. The planet appears blue because of the methane in its atmosphere. Voyager 2 discovered at least four rings, six moons, and interesting weather on Neptune, such as the Great Dark Spot (believed to be a hurricane the size of Earth). The spacecraft also captured images of Triton, Neptune's largest moon. See the background essay for updated information about Neptune and missions to the outer planets.

This video is available in both English and Spanish audio, along with corresponding closed captions. This resource is part of the NASA Planetary Sciences Collection.
