Explore how chimpanzees understand and react to what other chimpanzees know in this video from NOVA: Inside Animal Minds: Who's the Smartest? Scientists designed an experiment to see what happens when one chimpanzee (Missy) has knowledge that another chimpanzee (Rita) doesn't have. Missy sees where a banana is hidden but Rita does not. When given the chance, Missy sits on the hiding place but does not retrieve the banana until Rita is far away. She successfully deceives Rita to get the banana for herself. This type of behavior indicates that chimpanzees may have a theory of mind—they seem to understand what other chimpanzees know and can manipulate their behavior.
