In this lesson, students will compare various aspects of Horatio's travels with the journey of Lewis and Clark across the Louisiana Purchase. Students will review journals of both trips as well as other resources, and will write "position papers" comparing and contrasting the two trips. Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson accepted a gentleman's bet in 1903 and drove from San Francisco to New York City in a Winton touring car. On the centennial of Jackson's achievement, Ken Burns and Florentine Films made a documentary film that follows his historic - and hilarious - journey. Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip is a one-episode, two-hour film.
