        Mysteries of Deep Space | Activity: Determining Red-Shift in a Receding Star

        In this lesson, students will manipulate multivariable algebraic formulas, understand velocity, wavelength and frequency, study the Doppler effect, and determine the amount of red-shift in light from a receding star. Light is best described as a wave. All waves are characterized by a wavelength and a frequency. When the universe expands and objects move away from the Earth at incredible speed, their visible light spectra appears more red in color as a result of an increased wavelength.
