        General Jeffery Amherst

English School, (18th century) (after). Medium: lithograph. Amherst (1717-97) was a commander of British forces in America during the French and Indian War; at the outbreak of the American War of Independence he refused the command in 1774; some see this as due to his sympathy for the Americans but it seems that he just has no desire to return to America as he fully supported the government's colonial policy; Provenance: Private Collection / Peter Newark American Pictures.
