Parenting and Gender Roles in The Tempest

This video explores how gender impacts the role of Prospero in The Tempest. When played by a man (as Shakespeare originally intended), he appears as the archetypal competitive male, but when played by a woman, in this case by Helen Mirren as Prospera, the character appears more like a “tigress protecting her cub”--even though the script is the same.
