        In May 1903, President Teddy Roosevelt traveled to the Grand Canyon. It was his first visit and he was overwhelmed by the vista from the south rim. Said Roosevelt to the crowd that had gathered to greet him, "leave it as it is; the ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it."
