Visual literacy is a cross-curricular method of instruction that educators may incorporate in their lesson plans for students across all grade levels. Visual literacy instruction enables students to utilize critical thinking skills to understand and evaluate imagery. According to Visual Thinking Strategies, “VTS transforms the way students think and learn through programs based in theory and research that use discussions of visual art to significantly increase student engagement and performance.” Images may include art, photography, illustrations, advertisements, political cartoons, and other visuals that surround students.
