        The Lesson

        Part I: Learning Activity

        1. Read the following to your students: "Two Atlanta Hawks basketball stars, LaPhonso Ellis and Alan Henderson, decide to travel from Atlanta, Georgia, to Springfield, Massachusetts, to visit the Basketball Hall of Fame. They want to figure out how far it is and how long the trip will take. You will watch a video segment to see how they do it. The video describes the 'legend' of a map. Be sure you know what that means. After the video, you will plan your own trip, so watch closely to see how the teammates make their calculations."

        4. Discuss handout 1. (Note: While the video relies on multiplication and division, the handout relies on ratio and proportion. Students are introduced to the use of ratio tables and ratio boxes. Emphasize that in ratio boxes they must always preserve the operation of multiplication or division as they move vertically and horizontally.)

        Part II: Assessment

        Assessment: Level A (proficiency): Students apply scaling to ratio and proportion and learn to use ratio tables to relate measurements on maps to distance in actual miles.

        Assessment: Level B (above proficiency): Students apply scaling to ratio and proportion, and they learn to use ratio tables to relate estimated speed to travel time.
