Anthracite coal once powered America, providing heat and transportation. At its height, the coal mining industry employed more than 200,000 people. Today, that industry in Pennsylvania has all but disappeared. Coal mining is not forgotten thanks to the photography of George Harvan. WLVT PBS 39 presents an episode of Lehigh Valley Tempo! highlighting the growth of the coal industry in eastern PA. Many of the images in this segment are the work of George Harvan. Harvan had the unique opportunity of working for the Lehigh Valley Coal and Navigation Company as a photographer when most coal companies would not allow photographers into their mines.
