        A German Present or the Lover's Token, 1816

        English School, (19th century). Medium: coloured engraving. Date: 1816. The Prince Regent , later George IV (1762-1830) King of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover (1820-30) presents the German Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Saxony (1790-1865) (later from 1831 the first King of the Belgians) as a suitor for the hand of his daughter, Princess Charlotte; Princess Charlotte (1796-1817), only child of George IV and Caroline of Brunswick; scene is at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, where in February, 1816, the Prince Regent had invited his daughter to meet Prince Leopold; Provenance: Private Collection.
