The mainly Conservative and Unionist House of Lords vetoed the Liberal Government's Budget of 1909, known as 'The People's Budget'; the January election resulted in a hung parliament and a second election was held in December, 1910; again the result was a hung parliament but led ultimately to the Parliament Act of 1911 and the restriction of the power of the Lords; Provenance: Private Collection.
