Captain in French and Portuguese navies; governor of the Ile de France (Mauritius) and the Ile de Bourbon (Reunion); President of Council of Command and General of French Indies Fleet; arrested in 1748 on charges of embezzlement and bad administration and imprisoned in Bastille, but in 1751 he was acquitted; the town of Mahe off the Malabar coast was named after him; Administrator in the Compagnie Francaise des Indes Orientales; Provenance: Musee des Arts d'Afrique et d'Oceanie, Paris, France / Giraudon.
