        Pyramus and Thisbe

        Cranach, Lucas, the Elder (1472-1553). Medium: oil on panel. Date: 16th Century. Parents would not allow them to marry; meeting at the Tomb of Ninus, under a mulberry tree; Thisbe was frightened away by a lioness, which mauled her cloak which she had dropped; Pyramus found cloak and thought she was dead; drew sword and plunged it into his side; blooms on tree turned from white to purple; Thisbe found Pyramus's body and killed herself; Provenance: Neue Residenz, Bamberg, Germany / Giraudon.
