Opera performed by the Archduchesses of the Imperial Hapsburg family to celebrate the marriage on 23rd January 1765 of their brother, Joseph II, to his second wife, the Bavarian princess, Maria Josepha of Bavaria (1739-67); L to R: Josepha in the role of the muse Euterpe, Elisabeth as the Muse Melpomene, Amelia as the god Apollo and Charlotte as the Muse Erato; in the sky Pegasus, the winged horse of classical mythology; 'Parnassus in Confusion was composed by Gluck with libretto by Metastasio; copy of the original painting in Vienna commissioned by Marie-Antoinette in 1778 for her palace at Versailles; Provenance: Ch�teau de Versailles, France / Giraudon.
