        Mme Titon du Tillet

        Largilliere, Nicolas de (1656-1746); French. Medium: oil on canvas. Date: 17th Century. Nee Marguerite Angelique Becaille (d.1721); in 1656 married Maximilien Titon (1632-1711), Directeur General des Magasins d'Armes de Louis XIV; Titon acquired a huge fortune through arms manufacture and dealing and in 1706 he and his wife founded a convent of nursing nuns at Saint-Mande (Couvent des Dames Hospitalieres de l'Ordre de saint-Augustin); in their early married life, they were not so prosperous and Mme Titon was nanny (nourrice) to the children of Marquis de Louvois (1639-71) who from 1662 was responsible for the reorganisation of the French army; Provenance: Musee des Beaux-Arts et d'Archeologie, Besancon, France.
