        Cot, Pierre Auguste (1837-83); French. Medium: colour lithograph. Date: 1893. Mireille is the hero of the opera 'Mireille' by Charles Gounod (1818-93) first performed 1864; His inspiration was a prose translation of the Provencal poem 'Mireio' written by Frederic Mistral (1830-1914) and published 1859; Mireille is a wealthy Provencal girl who falls in love with a lowly basket-weaver, Vincent; Provenance: Private Collection / Giraudon.
