Saint Bernardino of Siena with two Donors, 1460-70

Villatte, Pierre (fl. 1460-70) (attr. to); French. Medium: oil on panel. Date: 1460-70. Saint-Bernardin de Sienne et deux donateurs. It has been suggested that the two donors are intended to be portraits of Isabelle de Lorraine (1410-53), first wife of Ren d'Anjou, comte de Provence and her son Jean de Calabre (1425/7-70). Saint Bernardino of Siena popularized the use of the three letter Christogram, IHS, on a background of a blazing sun. Provenance: Musee Grobet-Labadie, Marseille, France. Photographic Rights The Bridgeman Art Library.
