A Present for a Papist, or the Life and Death of Pope Joan, 1675

English School, (17th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 1675. According to a legend first noticed in medieval European chronicles of the 13th century, Pope Joan was a female pope who reigned as Pope c.1100 and gave birth to a son while out riding on horseback; the story is now considered fictitious; this illustration forms part of an English 17th century anti-Catholic propaganda pamphlet published in London and describing Rome as 'The Whore of Babylon'; Provenance: Private Collection.
