        The Meeting of Mary Seacole

        English School, (19th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 19th Century. Mary Seacole was a Jamaican nurse who established a 'hotel' to house and care for troops during the Crimean War (1854-56) she published an account of her travels in 1857; known as the 'Black Florence Nightingale'; Alexis Soyer was a French Chef who joined Seacole in the Crimea to advise on army cooking and kept soldiers from suffering from malnutrition and food poisoning; designed the Soyer Stove for field use; Provenance: Private Collection.
