        Attack on the Westgate Hotel, Newport on 4th November 1839

        English School, (19th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 19th Century. Approximately 5,000 men marched into Newport and attempted to take over the town, they attacked the Westgate Hotel where the local authorities were holding a number of potential troublemakers; Chartist uprising; riot had its origins in the rejection of the People's Charter; Provenance: Private Collection.
