        Napoleon on sentry duty after the Battle of Pont d'Arcole, 15th-17th November 1796,

        French School, (19th century); French. Medium: engraving. Date: 19th Century. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) after his victory over the Austrians at Arcole in 1796, disguised himself at night as an officer and made the rounds of his troops; finding a sentry asleep on duty, he took the sentry's rifle and went on guard for two hours until the sleeping soldier awoke; Provenance: Private Collection.
