        Napoleon surrendering to Captain Maitland in 1808 on board the Bellerophon

        English School, (19th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 19th Century. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), after the battle of Waterloo, hoped to escape to America from the French Atlantic coast; Maitland (1777-1839) suspected that Napoleon would try his escape from Rochefort and kept HMS Bellerophon off the coast there; Napoleon surrendered on 15th July 1815 and was taken to Torbay; Provenance: Private Collection.
