English School, (17th century). Medium: woodcut. Date: 17th Century. Illustration from the Roxburghe Ballads, a collection of seventeenth century popular songs, mostly English, collected by Robert Harley initially and later compiled by John Ker, 3rd Duke of Roxburghe; the compilation was published in 1847 by John Payne Collier (1789-1883); scholars now think some are forgeries; Provenance: Private Collection.
