Illustration from Foxes's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe (1516-87), first published in 1563; Edmund Bonner (c.1500-69) was Bishop of London and during the reign of Mary I (1553-58) tried to eradicate the Protestant heresies by persecution and burning of heretics; he became known as 'Bloody Bonner'; Willes was released later from captivity on the intercession of his pregnant wife; Provenance: Private Collection.
