        Portrait of a gentleman believed to be Thomas Harriot, c.1620

        Delaram, Francis (c.1590-1627). English. Medium: engraving. Date: 17th Century. Thomas Harriot (c.1560-1621) English astronomer, mathematician, ethnographer and translator; the portrait could actually be of John Napier (1550-1617) the Scottish mathematician, physicist, astrologer and astronomer; the image could show the sitter using a Scacchiac Abacus or 'Napier's Bones' invented by Napier; Harriot was the first person to draw the moon through a telescope; Provenance: Private Collection.
