Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625-1712) Italian-French mathematician, astronomer, engineer and astrologer; also called Giandomenico Cassini or Jean- Dominique Cassini; first director of the Paris Observatory, which is the building Cassini is pointing to in the background of the image; 1879 painting by Leopold Durangel with similar composition in the Paris Observatory, possibly based on this engraving; he discovered the moons of Jupiter; Provenance: Private Collection.
