The Body of Elaine on its way to King Arthur's Palace, illustration from 'Idylls of the King' by Alfred Tennyson

Dore, Gustave (1832-83); French. Medium: lithograph. Date: 19th Century. Elaine dies because of the unrequited love she feels for Lancelot; when she dies her body is placed on a barge and rowed down river to Arthur's castle, Queen Guinevere throws the nine diamonds Lancelot has given her out of the window and in to the river as the barge is passing; this fulfils Elaine's dream that she is holding the ninth diamond, but it is too slippery and it falls in to a body of water; Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-92); Provenance: Private Collection. Photographic Rights The Bridgeman Art Library.
