        King John surrenders his crown to Pandulph Masca, Papal Legate, at Dover in May, 1213

        English School, (16th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 16th Century. King John (1166-1216) submitted to the papacy, surrendering England to Pope Innocent III and receving it again as a papal fief; this surrender ended the interdict and excommunication imposed by Pope Innocent in 1209; Provenance: Private Collection.
