        A Lesson for Spendthrifts by Dr. Johnson, 1794

        Newton, Richard (1777-98); British. Medium: etching. Date: 1794. Image shows 8 scenes depicting incidents from the life of a rake, from his claiming his inheritance to his final suicide; Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709-84) English writer and lexicographer, wrote the satrical verses for Hester Thrale on the coming of age of her nephew Sir John Lade (1759-1838) in 1780; Lade inherited a large fortune and, as Johnson predicted, he went on to squander it; Johnson's poem is sometimes known by the title 'one-and-twenty'; Provenance: Private Collection.
