James Boswell (1740-95), author of 'The Life of Samuel Johnson', on a ship in the Hebrides, he is told by the captain to hold a rope in order to distract him from the perils of the journey; the image is one in a series of pictures about Boswell's journey to Scotland with Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709-84); Provenance: Private Collection.
