Valee was a distinguished French soldier and artillery commander in the French Revolutionary, Napeoleonic and Algerian Wars; made Comte by Napoleon in 1814 after successful campaigns in Spain; retained by Louis XVIII after the Boourbon restoration and reorganised the French artillery (known as the Valee system); in 1837 sent to Algeria where after his capture of Constantine he was given the baton of a Marechal de France and appointed Governor General 1837-40; Provenance: Private Collection.
