        The Edinburgh mob carrying Captain Porteus to execution

        English School, (19th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 19th Century. Captain John Porteus (c.1695-1736) was the City Guard of Edinburgh who was lynched by a mob after the execution of Andrew Wilson; the crowd had become restless during Wilson's execution and Porteus ordered his men to open fire on the crowd, killing several civilians; Provenance: Private Collection.
